Grandma Caycee Mae: This was my mom’s first Mother’s Day without her mom, so I decided to surprise her that Sunday with a portrait of her mom from sometime in the late 1930’s.
Kai: My wife and I went to San Diego this summer for my nephew’s fourth birthday party. I decided to create his parents a drawing of him from one of their favorite pictures taken by a famous San Diego surf photographer when he was about two.
People are my absolute favorite subject to capture or create. My goal is to always give the piece a sense of emotion, something that naturally captivates the viewer and tells a story. Putting pen to paper is a direct download from the soul – – there are no electronics to interfere with the process, and therefore mistakes are made, lines are never perfect and the spirit of the subject is allowed to come through beautifully.
